Best Chocolate For Dipping
There are a variety of options when it comes to dipping strawberries in chocolate. For sure use your favorite kind of chocolate, like milk, dark, white, or even semi-sweet chocolate.
- Chocolate chips are a cheap and easy option for most people. You probably have a bag of milk chocolate chips or white chocolate chips in your pantry right now.
- A high quality chocolate bar is my preferred method. I highly recommend Ghirardelli or Scharffen Berger. A chocolate bar offers a more rich and decadent chocolate flavor and the quality of chocolate makes it a great choice for dipping fresh fruit into.
- Chocolate melts are another affordable option that works well for easy dipping. Melts offer a harder chocolate coating once set on the strawberries.
How To Melt Chocolate
There are several ways you can melt chocolate.
My personal favorite is just using the microwave. Place the chopped up chocolate or chocolate chips in a microwave-safe bowl and heat for 20 seconds at a time, stirring the chocolate each time until completely melted and smooth.
You could also use a double boiler. Check out this article from Bon Appetit to learn more.
And the other method is just melting it on the stovetop using a pot. Melt on low heat and continuously stir with a rubber spatula.
The easiest method I've found is just using the microwave though.
Ingredients Needed
Here are some notes on the ingredients we'll be using. For the full ingredients list, look at the recipe card below.
- Strawberries: Use fresh, not frozen.
- Chocolate: Use your favorite type of chocolate. I chose two. You could also use candy melts.
Instructions
Here are the step by step instructions on how to make perfect chocolate-covered strawberries at home.
Step 1: Prepare the strawberries. Thoroughly wash the strawberries and place them on a towel. Individually dry off each berry using a paper towel.
You must have dry strawberries before dipping them into the chocolate.
Step 2: Baking sheet. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside.
Step 3: Melt the chocolate. In a small bowl using the microwave, melt the bittersweet chocolate in 20 second intervals, stirring after each time, until melted and smooth.
Repeat in a different bowl with the white chocolate. Allow the melted chocolate to sit and cool for 5 minutes.
Step 4: Assemble. Hold a strawberry by the green leafy top and dip into one of the melted chocolates, going about ¾ up the strawberry.
Lift and gently shake off the excess chocolate before placing it onto the parchment paper lined baking sheet. Repeat with the rest of the strawberries.
Step 5: Chill. Place the baking sheet into the refrigerator to chill for 5-10 minutes so the chocolate will harden and set up quickly.
Step 6: Decorate. With the extra chocolate in each of the bowls, spoon it into a piping bag or sandwich bag.
Cut a small hole in the corner and drizzle over the chocolate covered strawberries (optional).
Topping Ideas
Before the chocolate sets on the strawberries you can dip them into an assortment of fun toppings. This is a great way to personalize your dessert and for everyone involved to have exactly what they want.
Here are some topping ideas:
- Finely chopped nuts
- Sanding sugars
- Sprinkles
- Shredded coconut
- Mini chocolate chips
- Crushed candy
Storage Tips
Although chocolate covered strawberries really should be consumed the same day they're made, they will last for up to 2 days in the refrigerator.
Just keep them in an airtight container.
Expert Baking Tips
- Prepare Baking Sheet: Line a 9x13 inch baking pan with parchment paper or wax paper. This will allow the chocolate to harden on the strawberries cleanly and makes removing them from the pan easy.
- Strawberries: If you have wet strawberries, make sure you completely dry them off with paper towels. If the fresh berries are wet, the melted chocolate will slide right off.
- Chill: If you're in a hurry to serve these sweet treats, place the baking sheet into the refrigerator. The chocolate will set on the strawberries within 5-10 minutes. If you're not in a hurry, just keep the pan sitting at room temperature for about 30 minutes.
Recipe FAQs
I like to, that way they're ready much quicker, but you could always allow them to set up at room temperature.
I personally love bittersweet or semi-sweet chocolate, but you honesty can't go wrong with any chocolate you choose! I just highly recommend you use a quality chocolate bar from a well known brand.
